Police said the suspect spiked the food of businessman Rakesh Singla, his driver Kamaljit and another domestic worker Lakshmi, and gagged and tied up Rakesh’s mother, Usha Singla, 67, before locking her in a toilet.

Usha somehow managed to free herself around 4:30 am. She climbed out of the toilet window and with the help of a security guard, alerted her other son, Arvind Singla, who immediately rushed to the house and called the police.

After responding to the spot, police found Rakesh, a heart patient, his driver and a domestic help unconscious. All were rushed to GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Served enriched food, drinks during dinner

According to investigations, the duo sedated all the residents of the house on Friday evening by offering them food and drinks laced with sedatives during dinner, causing them to become unconscious.

As Usha did not consume the food, the suspect tied her hands, gagged her and locked her in the toilet before stealing the money and gold.

The suspect had asked Usha where the money and jewelery were kept before locking her up. According to Usha, the accused duo was accompanied by three unknown persons in the crime.

The suspect even took the CCTV camera’s DVR before escaping to avoid identification. Police are scanning cameras installed in the area for clues about the suspect.

On Usha’s complaint, the police lodged an FIR at Sector 34 police station under Sections 395 (dacoity) and 328 (causing hurt by poison, etc., with intent to commit offence) of the Indian Code of criminal law. Police arrested a suspect on Saturday, but no further details have been released.

‘Nepali gang’ could be behind the crime

According to police, the suspect’s modus operandi pointed to the involvement of an organized gang called “Nepali gang” that robs people by infiltrating as domestic help. The gang operates from Delhi and Mumbai, police said.

In March this year, two members of this gang, who stole cash and jewelery from a Sector-36 house after stunning their NRI employer and his 85-year-old mother in October 2021, were convicted by a Chandigarh court life in prison.

Gangsters had opened fire at the victim’s house in 2020

Four years ago, on May 31, 2020, 17 gunshots were fired at Rakesh’s house in what police said was a targeted attack on his brother, liquor baron Arvind Singla. Police had later arrested members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang for the shooting.

Arvind is one of the suspects in the infamous Sector 37 house robbery case from March 2021.

Along with 10 other suspects, including a former journalist, suspended inspector and real estate dealers, Arvind is accused of torturing and illegally confining the victim, Rahul Mehta, 48, the only surviving heir of his family, in his 338 square meter house in April 2017 and forcibly transferred the general power of attorney (GPA) into their names.

Arvind was booked as the GPA of the property was transferred in his name along with another suspect. He had surrendered before the court and is currently out on bail.

After the GPA transfer, Rahul was left at a stud farm in Gujarat in June 2017, before being moved from one charity home to another in Maharashtra, Delhi and Rajasthan, where he was eventually traced. The case remains pending.
