A five-year-old boy and his eight-year-old sister were killed after a suspected drunk driver crashed a birthday party at a boat club in Michigan.

Another 15 people were injured when the car struck the club during the event, which was hosted at the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Detroit.

At least nine people were taken to hospital, some seriously injured, authorities said.

A 66-year-old woman who was driving the car has been arrested.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough says the woman remains in custody.

He added that more criminal charges are likely to be filed against her.

In a post on Facebook, the club announced it would be closed tomorrow following the “terrible accident” which caused damage to the pavilion.
