Vitaliy Bernadskiy is on the verge of winning the 21st BCC Open 2024

GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) defeated one of his co-leaders, GM Zong-Yuan Zhao (AUS) in the penultimate round of the 21st BCC Open 2024. He has become the sole leader with 7/8. The Ukrainian is followed by five players, half a point behind. They are FM Reja Neer Manon (BAN), IM Srihari LR, GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ), GM Mitrabha Guha and IM James Morris (AUS). Reja is the only player who has normal chances. He will face the newly crowned 2024 Commonwealth Champion: Mitrabha. Some order is being restored going into the final round of play with top seed Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) in the sole lead 7/8 after defeating one co-leader and 2013 BCC Open champion GM Zhao Zong-Yuan (AUS) .

A doctor by profession, Zhao hopes his performance at the BCC Open will be enough to impress the Australian selectors for the upcoming World Chess Olympiad to be held in Hungary.

The other co-leader, IM Arystanbek Urazayev (KAZ), was defeated by the third seed, Commonwealth 2024 gold medalist – GM Mitrabha Guha, dropping the pace and will meet another Indian GM in Lalit Babu MR in the final round.

Young Bengali FM Reja Neer Manon continues to impress. He is the only candidate for a GM norm and ranks second with four others, IM Srihari LR and GM Mitrabha Guha, GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ) and IM James Morris (AUS), all at 6.5/8.
