Softball sweeps Claflin, named CIAA Southern Division champions

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team defeated Claflin Saturday afternoon at Twin City Ballfield.

The Rams shot a perfect 10-0 in the Southern Division after winning game 1, 12-9 and game 2, 7-1 to move to 13-8 (12-4 CIAA, 10-0 SD).

How it happened – Game 1
The Panthers got on the scoreboard early with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Rams answered back with two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning. The Panthers scored a run in the second and third inning to make it 3-1, but Aniyah Jackson hit a home run to tie the game at 3-3 and end the third inning. Claflin scored another run in the top of the fourth inning to regain the lead. Hereafter, A. Jackson hit another homerun to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Claflin scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9–4 lead. WSSU scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-out walk-off double by Ale’eah Graham that sealed the win for the Rams.

Jyl Thomas went the distance and went 4-3 this season, recording six strikeouts.

How it happened – Game 2
The Rams’ bats stayed hot and took a commanding 6-0 lead after three innings. Claflin got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, but WSSU also scored in the bottom of the fourth inning (7-1). With the commanding leadership, BreAnna Steele ended the game with two strikeouts and the final batter flew to center field to give the Rams the win.

Steele went the distance and went 5-8 on the season with five strikeouts.

WSSU returns to action on Thursday, April 25, hosting Elizabeth City for a doubleheader beginning at Twin City Ballfield at 1 p.m.
