Eagles fall to Panthers in regular season finale, 4-2

Atlanta, GA. – Georgia Southern women’s tennis concluded the 2024 regular season with a 4-2 loss at Georgia State on Saturday.

The Eagles fell to 17-6 overall and 6-4 in the league with the loss, while Georgia State improved to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in the Sun Belt with the win. Georgia Southern will open action in the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Thursday, with the results to be revealed by league officials tomorrow.

The Panthers earned the doubles point thanks to victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Sonja Keranen tied the match at 1–1 with a 7–5, 6–2 win over Sveva Bernardi at No. 6 singles, and Paula Hijos managed to claim a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over Pragnya Kumar at No. 4 singles, but Georgia State won the match with victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles.

“Today, Georgia State came prepared for us and played a much stronger, physical match than we did,” said Georgia Southern’s head tennis coach. Sean McCaffrey said. “We certainly had places where we played well. Winning against Paula and Sonja in straight sets was proof of that, and I’m proud that Lindsay and Mackenzie found a way to extend each of their matches to three sets. Georgia State played with a lot of excitement and made the game extremely physical. They did a great job of getting us out of the game. Now our focus must be on the conference tournament and preparing to give everything we have.
