Charlotte Knights news story

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) – Third baseman Danny Mendick homered in his fifth straight game, but the Charlotte Knights dropped game five of the six-game series to the Syracuse Mets on Saturday by a score of 11-6 from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte night. The Mets scored five runs in the top of the 10th inning to advance for the win in Game Five.

Offensively, Mendick continued his torrid home run pace. Mendick, who started the game with a homerun in each of the four games in the series, homered for the fifth day in a row. His home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning, was his team-leading eighth of the season. Mendick is currently second in the International League in that category. He is now hitting .322 this season with the eight home runs and 20 RBI.

Despite the loss, the Knights put together another strong offensive performance. The team scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of centerfielder Wynton Bernard. It was his first long ball of the season with Charlotte. Designated hitter Oscar Colás also hit his first triple of the season in this inning.

LHP Jared Shuster made his second start of the season and allowed just one run over four strong innings. RHP Justin Anderson (0-1, 3.86) was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings pitched.

The Knights conclude their six-game home series against the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets) from Truist Field on Sunday. “Voice of the Charlotte Knights” Matt Swierad and longtime Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call at www.CharlotteKnights.com starting at 1 p.m. The first pitch is scheduled for Sunday at 1:05 PM.
