Softball beats UCSB twice in doubleheader

SANTA BARBARA, California. – Cal State Fullerton softball secured the series victory over UC Santa Barbara after defeating the Gauchos 3-0, 6-2 at the Campus Diamond on Saturday. The Titans improve to 29-14 on the season and sit atop the Big West standings with a conference record of 15-2.

Haley Rainey (7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 6 BB, 12 K) threw her second no-hitter of the season in the series opener.

Head of the Titans Kelly Ford earned her 400th Division I career victory after the second victory of the day. All 400 wins at the Division I level have come as head of Titans Softball. She has amassed a total of 855 wins between Mt. San Antonio College and Cal State Fullerton.

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Santa Barbara 0

Megan Delgadillo opened the first inning with a single to center, giving Yasmin Mossadeghi (1999-02) the third most hits of his career (249) as a Titan. Delgadillo recorded her 250th career hit in the third inning with a double to center field, passing Mossadeghi.

Delgadillo (3-for-4, 2B, R, SB) had her 65th hit of the season for a career total of 251 hits. She is six shy of tying Sew Lewis (1981-84) for the all-time record (257).

Bailey Wallace (1-for-4, RBI) scored the game’s first run with an RBI single through the left side to score Kate Verhoefwho reached base on a lead-off walk in the third inning. Hanna Becerra Delgadillo drove in a sacrifice bunt for a 2-0 lead over the Gauchos.

Becerra (1-for-1, HR, 2 RBI, R) sent her seventh home run over the left-center field fence in the fifth inning, extending Fullerton’s lead to 3-0. She has the third-most career home runs in program history and is four shy of tying Missy Taukeiaho (2014-16) for the second-most home runs.

Haley Rainey (15-4) threw her second career no-hitter in the 3-0 victory over the Gauchos on Saturday. Rainey silenced the Gauchos for seven innings with no hits, six walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Her first no-hitter came in her perfect six-inning game against Pacific at Anderson Family Field on February 10. The last Titan to throw a no-hitter was a teammate Staci Rooms against Colorado State on February 11.

Cal State Fullerton 6, UC Santa Barbara 2

Candace Yingling began the scoring in the top of the second inning with an infield single that resulted in a rundown and both runners advancing to scoring positions at second and third base. Colby McClinton (some) and Alexia Lopez (single) scored on the play, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.

Lopez (1-for-2, RBI, R) became the third runner to cross the plate when Delgadillo grounded her to second base. Wallace (1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) extended Fullerton’s lead to 4-0 before the end of the second inning with a double down the left field line.

Delgadillo (1-for-4, RBI) hit a blooper into shallow left field in the fourth inning with runners on second and third base. She is five hits shy of tying Sew Lewis (1981-84) for the all-time record (257).

Wallace followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring a pinch runner Kristalyn Romulo for a 5-0 lead.

The Gauchos scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run to right field. Staci Rooms (5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 (E)R, 3 BB, 5 K) ended her performance in the sixth inning on an inside run. Rainey came on in relief for Chambers and got out of the inning with a swinging strikeout.

Lopez found the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning and scored Sarah Perez on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Titans secured their 6-2 win over the Gauchos in the seventh inning as Rainey didn’t allow a hit.
The Titans and Gauchos will conclude their series in Santa Barbara on Sunday from 1 p.m
