KC Current remains undefeated, wins 5-2 vs. Bay F.C

After a road match in New Jersey against Gotham FC, where the Current earned a point, remained undefeated and topped the table, Kansas City returned to CPKC Stadium to host Bay FC. The streak would be extended to five, with the Current remaining undefeated after a 5–2 win, the only team in the NWSL without a loss.

From XI

Hailie Mace returned to the starting lineup and Bayley Feist earned her second start as a substitute for Lo LaBonta, who missed another game due to injury. The rest of the line-up remained pretty much the same with the usual cast.

KC does KC things

KC started the attack early and super early, as two goals in the seventh minute gave them a 2-0 lead.

  • Goal number 1: Bia Zaneratto with her third goal of the season.
  • Goal number 2: Bayley Feist with her first goal of the season, from a corner kick with a header. Assisted by Alexa Spaanstra.

According to OptaJack, Feist became the 10th different goal scorer for Kansas City this season. It is the most in NWSL history for a team through its first five games.

However, Bay FC was able to get on the board in the 17th minute. Kansas City gave up another goal off a set piece, a corner kick when Kayla Sharples connected on a header. It would be the only goal Kansas City gave up in the first half, maintaining a 2-1 halftime lead.

It’s the Chawinga & Bia show!

We just live in it. Real. If there were any concerns about a 2-1 lead in the second half, Chawinga and Bia showed why there shouldn’t be as both helped extend the lead. Chawing with 2 goals, and Bia with another goal in this match.

  • Goal number 3: Chawinga laid the ball down so easily after a pass and crossed into the penalty area for a shot into the bottom right corner. Comfortable. Goal.
  • Goal number 4: With a long ball from Vanessa DiBenardo to Chawinga and goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx almost out of the penalty area, Chawinga throws the ball in for her second goal of the match.
  • Goal number 5: Bia receives a pass from Chawinga. Loses the ball for a moment, but recovers and uses it for another goal.

Bay FC briefly spoiled the fun by adding a second goal, but it wouldn’t be enough or close enough to completely spoil the party. Kansas City with the 5-2 win and top of the standings.
